Form of Worship

Why do we stand when we sing?
"And the Levites...of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with a loud voice on high" (2 Chron. 20:19)

Why do we lift our hands?
"Thus I will bless Thee while I live; I will lift up my hands in Thy name." (Psalms 63:4) "Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord." (Psalms 134:3) "I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting." (1 Tim. 2:8)

Why do we sing in tongues and in English?
"For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." (1 Cor. 14:14)

Why do we have this type of worship?
"But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth." (John 4:23,34)

Why do we sing Choruses as well as hymns?
"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord." (Eph. 5:18-19)

Why do we prophesy?
"But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men unto edification, and exhortation and comfort" (1 Cor. 14:31) "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. To one is given by the Spirit...prophesy..." (1 Cor. 12:8-10). "If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and all may be comforted." (1 Cor. 14:31)

Why do we have speaking in and interpretation of tongues?
"Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues." (1 Cor. 14:39) "For to one is given by the Spirit...divers kinds of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues." (1 Cor. 14:8-10) "If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and let one interpret." (1 Cor. 14:27)

Why does the whole church pray together?
"And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, 'Lord, Thou art God, which hast made heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in them.'" (1 Acts 4:24)

Why do we anoint with oil and pray for the sick?
"Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, annointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him." (James 5:14,15)
